Dick Advocaat named as assistant to Netherlands coach Blind

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) - Veteran coach Dick Advocaat has been appointed as assistant to Danny Blind ahead of the Netherlands' tough qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Dutch football association announced 68-year-old Advocaat's appointment late Saturday, saying he will join the squad for a training camp in Portugal next Sunday as it prepares for friendlies against Ireland, Poland and Austria.

The Netherlands is rebuilding after failing to qualify for this summer's European Championship in France.

Advocaat has twice been head coach of his country's national team and twice assistant coach. He also has led national teams including South Korea, Russia, Belgium and clubs including PSV, Glasgow Rangers and Sunderland.

Blind says, "It is good that we can call on his experience and know-how. I'm looking forward to working with him."
