Badminton: Buffalo Grove fourth at state tourney

Buffalo Grove's badminton team rode a third-place doubles finish from Tori Appelt and Allison MacDonald to a fourth-place team finish in the state tournament on Saturday at Eastern Illinois.

The Bison tandem lost their semifinal matchup 22-20, 21-18 to the eventual doubles champions, Eva Chen and Sophia Li of Neuqua Valley.

But the BG seniors bounced back to win their third-place matchup 14-21, 21-11, 21-11 against Clara Duan and Clare Jiang of Naperville North.

Buffalo Grove's Katie Jarosz and Megan Gamber won twice more Saturday in the consolation bracket before falling in a three-setter in the semifinals.

Fremd's Jenny Li won her singles quarterfinal matchup before falling 21-19, 25-23 to eventual champ Judy Yang of Hinsdale South in the championship bracket semifinals.

Neuqua Valley's dominance in doubles gave the Wildcats a dominant victory with 21 points.

Hinsdale South (13) was second, followed Naperville North (11).

Buffalo Grove, the Mid-Suburban League champion, finished with 10.5 points to finish ahead of a three-way tie for fifth place between Fremd, Hinsdale Central and Oak Park-River Forest.
