Baseball: Sullivan homers twice in second game of split with Benet

St. Viator's baseball team split a pair of games against visiting Benet Academy on Saturday in East Suburban Catholic Conference play.

The Lions' Dan Sullivan sure had a game to remember in the second matchup.

Sullivan cracked a pair of home runs to help St. Viator top Benet Academy 7-3. He finished 3-for-5 with 4 RBI. Cole Kmet also homered for the Lions (16-13) and earned the pitching decision after a complete-game effort which included 10 strikeouts, 5 hits and 3 walks.

The first game was all Benet, as the Redwings rolled to an 8-0 victory. Mike Ragauskis had 3 hits for St. Viator while Jack Sexton had 2 and Chris Lolli doubled.

Hersey 7, Stagg 3 (8 inn.): The visiting Huskies forced extra innings by scoring twice in the seventh, then took command of the nonconfernce game with a 4-run eighth.

Luke LaSalvia drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth.

Huskies leadoff hitter Brett Harris started the game by doubling and later scored to give his team an early lead.

Stagg committed 5 errors, while Hersey (13-14) had none.

Brendan Stonequist went all 8 innings for the Huskies, tossing 100 pitches and allowing 6 hits with 5 strikeouts.

Barrington 11, Lake Forest 8: Tristan Michael hit a solo homer and Patrick Dehnert finished 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI to lift the host Broncos in nonconference play.

Blake Swanson also had 2 hits, and Barrington (24-7) played error-free defense behind five pitchers as Ryan Tinkoff earned the win in relief.

Schaumburg 13, Streamwood 5: The visiting Saxons put 10 runs across in the fifth inning on their way to a nonconference win.

Cleanup hitter Josh Rivera delivered a pair of doubles and drove in 2 runs for Schaumburg (12-14). Kevin Carpenter and Vinnie Kandefer also had 2 hits for the Saxons.

Kandefer earned the pitching decision after allowing 4 hits over 4 innings.

New Trier 18, Maine West 13: The visiting Warriors produced a 13-run third inning, yet still trailed by a run after New Trier scored 14 in the previous frame.

Sean Russell, Nick Stone and Matt Johnston each had 2 hits for the Warriors (12-13), and Eric Outlaw walked three times and drove in 3 runs.

Wauconda 5, Palatine 0: The host Pirates didn't meet with much success against Wauconda starter Kevin Malisheski (5 IP, 1 hit, 9 strikeouts) or reliever Korey Soetaert (2 IP, 2 hits, 3 strikeouts) in a nonconference loss.

McHenry 8, Conant 0: Jimmy Brady and Jim McLaughlin had 2 hits apiece as the host Cougars (15-15) suffered a nonconference setback.

Grant 13, Buffalo Grove 3 (5 inn.): Ricky Allen hit a solo homer to help Grant (17-12) give the Bison (11-16) a nonconference loss.

Mundelein 6, Fremd 4: Tommy Josten had a pair of hits and drove in 2 runs, but the visiting Vikings (15-9) couldn't quite keep pace with the Mustangs in nonconference play.

Lockport 4, Elk Grove 1: The MSL East champions slipped to 19-11 after managing just 3 singles against visiting Lockport and pitchers Ryan Gabriel and Drew Flanagan in nonconference play.
