Boys water polo: Fremd, Barrington meet with sectional title at stake

The top two boys water polo teams in the Mid-Suburban West will battle it out for a spot in next week's state tournament.

Sectional host Fremd and Barrington both won their sectional semifinal games in decisive fashion Friday and will meet in the championship game at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Fremd (24-5), the MSL West champ and the top sectional seed, handled Prospect 17-3 with seniors Robert De Pau (6 goals), Dylan Assmann (5) and Alex Nicholas (4) leading the scoring effort. De Pau and Nicholas also had 3 assists apiece, and Assmann and Ryan Dudar had 2 assists.

Barrington (27-5), the No. 2 seed, got a game-high 7 goals from Tom Derken and 3 apiece from junior standouts John Fischer and Mitch Gavars in stopping Conant 16-5.

Buffalo Grove sectional: Stevenson (25-6) will meet Mundelein (24-8) in Saturday's 11 a.m. championship matchup after both teams won comfortably in their semifinal games Friday.

Top-seeded Stevenson eliminated McHenry 25-13 as Collin Kapecki (5 goals), Andrew Shashin (4) and Kurt Holzer led the scoring effort. Senior Kevin Braun had 5 goals and Jackson Smith 3 for fourth-seeded McHenry (15-11).

Second-seeded Mundelein advanced by topping third-seeded Wheeling 17-8.

Mike Ward (5 goals) and Erick Nielson (4) paced the Mustangs, while senior standout Nate Reiff concluded his high school playing career with 4 goals.
