Baseball: Engquist's slam paces Prospect

Prospect's Trevor Engquist came up with a sixth-inning grand slam as the visiting Knight scored 5 runs in the frame on their way to a 6-4 victory at Schaumburg in a Mid-Suburban League baseball matchup.

Engquist also had a triple on his way to finishing with 5 RBI.

Grant Whitebloom (2 hits) and Richie Baszek both doubled for Prospect (17-8, 9-6), and Ryan Howe earned a complete game victory.

Tyler Fredrickson had 2 hits, Andrew Ralston had a double and Jacob Rintz drove in 2 runs for the Saxons (11-14, 5-10).

Fremd 2, Buffalo Grove 1: The host Vikings made a 2-run third inning hold up for winner Jared Swenson in MSL play.

Buffalo Grove's Chase Marsh doubled and scored in the seventh inning, but JT Kolderup relieved Swenson to get the final out, and a save.

Ethan Hajdukovic and Justin Castillo each drove in a run for Fremd (15-8, 11-5), and Kolderup had a double.

Riley Rundquist, Joey Pinakidis and Marsh each had 3 hits for Buffalo Grove (11-16, 6-9). Bison starter Justin Meyer allowed 4 hits over 6 innings.

Hoffman Estates 2, Elk Grove 1: Ryan Ward of Hoffman Estates and Jonathan Maday had quite a pitchers' duel in Mid-Suburban League baseball on Friday, with the host Hawks prevailing 2-1.

Both hurlers tossed 6-hit complete games.

Ward struck out four with no walks, while Maday fanned nine and walked one.

In the first inning, Hoffman Estates' Marc Gonzalez doubled and later scored on an infield grounder by Lucas Barnes.

Elk Grove tied it with an unearned run in the second inning, and it stayed tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Hoffman Estates' Tom Curcio doubled with one out and scored on the Hawks' only error of the game.

A key defensive play also benefited Hoffman Estates. In the sixth inning, Elk Grove's AJ Lorenz singled and stole second base. He attempted to steal third as well, but a batted ball went right to Barnes at third base; he fielded the ball, tagged out Lorenz and fired to first base for an unconventional double play.

Barrington 9, Rolling Meadows 2: Blake Swanson homered, finishing 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, 2 runs scored and a walk, as the MSL West champs improved to 23-7 overall.

Tyler Acosta had 3 hits for the host Broncos, and Tristan Michaels and Jeff Korus had 2 apiece.

Four pitchers worked for Barrington, with Brad Peters getting the decision in a relief appearance.

Ryan Laboda and Hank Holm both doubled and finished with 2 hits for Rolling Meadows (4-21, 4-11).

Palatine 8, Hersey 2: The host Pirates rallied for 5 runs in the fifth inning to win a third straight game in MSL play.

In the key inning, Palatine's Matt Lamm had an RBI double, Danny Schneberger contributed a sacrifice fly and Charlie Van Dyke had a 2-run single. Jack Grochowski had a 3-hit game, and Van Dyke finished with 4 RBI.

Ryan Anderson got a complete-game win, allowing 4 hits and 2 unearned runs.

Conant 5, Wheeling 4: The visiting Wildcats trailed most of the game before tying it with 2 runs in the sixth inning and 2 more in the seventh.

But Conant answered with a decisive run in the bottom of the seventh as Jack Lunkes singled and took second on an error, then was driven in by Jimmy Brady.

Logan Smith finished 2-for-2 with 2 RBI for Conant (15-14, 8-7), and Ryan Roberts earned a victory with an inning of relief.

Christian Hubbard, Kyle Bullock and Joey Sineni each had 2 hits for Wheeling (12-19, 3-12). Bullock, Sineni and Brian Maloney each doubled.
