Baseball: Lake Zurich battles past Carmel

Kyle Fleming hit a solo homer, Ben Cornelius struck out 10 batters in 6 innings of 1-run ball, and Lake Zurich's baseball team picked up a 4-1 nonconference win over Carmel Catholic on Friday.

Kevin Johlie was 2-for-2 with an RBI for Lake Zurich (11-15). Nick Sanders pitched the seventh for the Bears and earned the save.

Cooper Johnson (1-for-1, 2 walks) homered for Carmel's lone run.

Warren 8, Lake Forest Academy 5: Luke Schmitt hit a home run for the Blue Devils in the nonconference game.

Tanner Dyer, Michael Rosenberg, Ryan Davila and Ricky Lee doubled for Warren (22-8).

Zion-Benton 3, Vernon Hills 0: Matt Hamlet went the distance on the mound for the Zee-Bees in the North Suburban crossover, allowing only 2 hits while walking two and striking out one.

Hamlet kept the Cougars off balance and pitched to his defense. The Zee-Bees were flawless behind their starter.

Joe Rangel took the loss, giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits over 4 innings. Rangel struck out four but walked three and hit one. Z-B scored all of its runs in the fourth.

Sam Perlin and Brad Larsen both pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Vernon Hills.
