Baseball: Hersey's bats heat up against Antioch

Hersey's baseball team banged out 18 hits and reached a season-high in runs while claiming a 20-14 victory over visiting Antioch on Thursday in nonconference play.

The Huskies (12-13) produced 8 runs in the first inning yet still trailed after the top of the third inning, when the Sequoits produced a 10-run at-bat.

Hersey regained control with 5 runs in the bottom of the third and never again trailed.

Tanner Luke finished 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 3 RBI, and Brett Harris, Paul Tokar and Luke LaSalvia had 3 hits apiece.

Buzz Lindgren earned a victory in relief as Hersey sent four players to the mound.

Niles North 4, Maine West 1: Jovanni Sanchez tossed a complete-game 2-hitter for Niles North as the Warriors (12-12) came up short in CSL North play.

Marist 7, St. Viator 3: The Lion played error-free ball behind starter Kevin Napoleon and reliever Kyle Hammarlund yet still came up short in an East Suburban Catholic Conference road test as Marist had a 3-run rally in the third inning and a 4-run fifth.

Cole Kmet and Chris Lolli had 2 hits apiece for St. Viator (15-13).

Wednesday's corrected result

Wheeling's baseball team picked up a 6-5 victory over Rolling Meadows at Heritage Park on Wednesday as DJ Godlewski drew a bases-loaded walk to force in Brian Maloney in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Patrick Cooney tossed all 8 innings for Wheeling, striking out six.

A report in Thursday's editions incorrectly reported that Wheeling lost the game 5-4.

Cooney's effort turned out to be key for the Wildcats.

"He battled all game and wiggled out of some tough spots for us," said Wheeling coach Jason Wieder. "Pat was a real competitor out there."

The Wildcats (12-18, 3-11) rallied from behind to force extra innings. Malone singled home Mike Wiase to tie it at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.

After Rolling Meadows went ahead with 1 run in the top of the seventh, Wheeling's Christian Hubbard doubled with one out and scored a pinch-hit single by Joey Sineni to force extra innings.

In the eighth, Brian Maloney and Nate Dirkes singled with two outs, and after an intentional walk to Hubbard, Godlewski walked.

For Rolling Meadows, Mark Dillon doubled and Jack Lincoln and Justin Thompson had triples. Trent McNally had 2 of his team's 6 hits, and Ryan Laboda drove in 2 runs for the Mustangs (4-20, 4-10).
