Master chef visits Dist. 15 to promote healthy eating

Master Chef Jimmy Gherardi from the "Chefs Move to Schools" program visited Palatine Township Elementary District 15 recently to offer staff tips on preparing healthy food for students who get their lunches at school.

Chefs Move to Schools, part of first lady Michelle Obama's "Let's Move" campaign, aims to work with districts to improve students' eating habits.

Gherardi has received a Golden Carrot Award for his work in making school lunches healthier, and is the chef in residence at The Seven Hills Schools in Cincinnati.

He visited two District 15 junior highs and one elementary school to see how the district prepares food for students. He also demonstrated tips for preparing the "clean label" hamburger the district plans to start serving in the fall. The hamburger has recognizable and natural ingredients.

Gherardi also discussed ways staff could bring new foods, such as Moroccan meatballs with organic vegetable couscous, to the menu.

"There was a positive vibe in the meeting as marketing and other ideas were discussed," said Bobbie Desprat, school nutrition services director. "We are hoping to bring Chef Gherardi back in the fall to work alongside our staff for two days, which will be very exciting."
