New theater company comes to Lake Forest

Suburban newcomer Lake Forest Theatre announced its inaugural season will begin June 10 with "The Secret Garden."

Artistic director Steve Malone will helm the musical adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel about Mary, an 11-year-old orphan who goes to live with her uncle and ill cousin at their Yorkshire, England, estate where the children uncover a magic garden.

That's followed by Mel Brooks' musical adaptation of his film "Young Frankenstein" (Oct. 7-30), in which Frederick Frankenstein follows family tradition by attempting to reanimate a corpse.

"A Chorus Line," the musical by Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban that glimpses the personal lives of 17 dancers auditioning for a spot in a Broadway chorus, runs March 24 to April 16, 2017.

The upcoming season also includes a masquerade ball fundraiser on Oct. 31 and a holiday show, "The Twelve Days of White Christmas," which runs Dec. 5 to 24 and consists of a buffet dinner and entertainment from Chicago area theater artists.

Performances take place at the newly renovated John & Nancy Hughes Theatre at the Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest. A three-show subscription package is $120. Single tickets are $49. See lakeforesttheatre.org or call (847) 604-4975.
