Chicago police officer shoots armed suspect on south side

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago police says an officer has shot an armed suspect on the city's far south side.

Chief of Detectives Gene Roy says the shooting occurred around 9:20 a.m. Friday while a fugitive apprehension unit comprised of Chicago police and U.S. marshals were serving a warrant to a robbery suspect.

Roy says the suspect tried to flee and then stopped and pointed a weapon at officers. He says an officer fired several shots.

Roy says the suspect tried to dispose of his gun and continue running, but collapsed. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The Independent Police Review Authority was at the scene.

The Chicago Tribune reports it was the first Chicago police shooting since 16-year-old Pierre Loury died April 11. The boy's family is suing the city.
