One dead, one injured in 4-vehicle crash on inbound Kennedy

A man was killed Friday morning when his Dodge Caravan rear-ended a pickup truck on the inbound Kennedy Expressway near Harlem Avenue, authorities said.

The crash, which led to four-vehicle pileup, happened at 7:37 a.m. and closed the inbound Kennedy for several hours.

According to the Illinois State Police, the Caravan, traveling in the far right lane at a "significant rate of speed," hit the rear of a Ford pickup truck driven by a 32-year-old Romeoville man.

The man driving the Dodge Caravan did not break or reduce speed before hitting the pickup, authorities say. He was pronounced dead at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. He has been identified, but authorities are not making his name public at this time.

The collision caused a chain reaction - the Ford pickup then hit the rear of a Chevrolet Cruze, which then struck the rear of a Ford Explorer, police said. All the vehicles involved were stopped in heavy rush-hour traffic when they were hit, except for the Dodge Caravan.

The 42-year-old Chicago man driving the Chevrolet Cruze was taken to Resurrection Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.

State police, the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Chicago Fire Department and Chicago Police responded to the crash.
