Chicago Fire closes deal for new midfielder

The Chicago Fire on Wednesday confirmed the long-expected acquisition of Senegalese midfielder Khaly Thiam.

Thiam, 22, is considered a box-to-box midfielder. He had been playing in Hungary for MTK Budapest FC. He will train with his new teammates for the first time Thursday. He is on loan to the Fire through the end of this MLS season.

The Daily Herald first reported talks to acquire Thiam on March 21.

"Khaly has a wide skill set that we believe will prove complementary to our current group," said Fire general manager Nelson Rodríguez in a team news release. "He is good in possession, an effective ball winner and gets forward quite well. Importantly, he has a deep desire to triumph."

The Fire is 1-2-4 for 7 points this season, tied for last based on points per game in the Eastern Conference. The team has struggled to produce shots on goal.
