Fonda, Tomlin reteam for second season of Netflix's 'Grace and Frankie'

The teamwork continues for Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

Thirty-five years after they first merged talents (along with Dolly Parton) in the hugely popular movie comedy "9 to 5," they reunited for "Grace and Frankie," the Netflix show about two women whose respective husbands (played by Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston) left them ... for each other.

Now, it's time for the second round of the women's shared exploits as the streaming service debuts all 13 new Season 2 episodes Friday, May 6. Sitcom-veteran series creators Marta Kauffman ("Friends") and Howard J. Morris ("Home Improvement") remain the executive producers, with Brooklyn Decker and Ethan Embry among those continuing in the regular cast.

At the end of the first season, Tomlin's Frankie advises Fonda's Grace to trying "vlogging." So she did, drawing a new man into her life played by Sam Elliott, who's also working for Netflix in "The Ranch." The double-Oscar-winning actress reports their relationship in the show "gets really complicated and kind of wonderful," with Amy Madigan portraying his wife. They follow such past guest stars as Joe Morton, Christine Lahti, Craig T. Nelson and Michael Gross.

While Kennedy Center Honors recipient Tomlin says she appreciates the new lease on life Frankie has gotten in the show, she's not sure she has one herself. "I think I had enough adventures when I was maybe 15, and I didn't go to juvenile delinquency school," she reflects with her trademark drollness. "I don't cling to those things in the past. I think I probably had a pretty good time."

Fonda maintains her rapport with Tomlin, both on camera and off, and remains one of the biggest draws for her to continue making "Grace and Frankie."

"Well, we do have a special bond and a friendship. I love being with her for all kinds of reasons, but she has a funny bone. I come from a long line of depressed people, and she has a true funny bone. That's one of the reasons I love going to work every day. I get to spend time with somebody whose take on everything comes from a place of 'funny,' which for me is total catharsis."

"Grace and Frankie" received award consideration for its first year, with Tomlin nominated for both an Emmy and a Golden Globe. The show already has been renewed for Season 3.

Kauffman says writing for the cast is "an adventure."

"You have to be courageous in ways that you don't when you do a movie, (which is) sort of a limited thing," Kauffman says. "When you do a TV show, as time goes on, you know more and more and more. It's like a long-term relationship, so that is its own kind of adventure."
