Los Angeles chef, Chicago's Alinea win big at Beard Awards

CHICAGO (AP) - Chef Suzanne Goin of Lucques restaurant in Los Angeles took home the outstanding chef award, and Chicago's Alinea won outstanding restaurant at this year's James Beard Awards.

The awards were presented Monday night at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. It's the awards' second year in the Second City after more than two decades in New York.

This year's win was the first top prize for Alinea. Its chef, Grant Achatz, won the outstanding chef award in 2008.

This year's outstanding restaurateur award went to Ken Friedman of New York.

Dahlia Narvaez of Los Angeles' Osteria Mozza won the outstanding pastry chef award. Her win combined with Goin's top prize and Los Angeles chef Nancy Silverton's outstanding chef win in 2014 shows the West Coast is earning its due.
