After beating pneumonia, Wauconda boy gets memory of a lifetime

What started as a scary situation for 6-year-old Brayden Kirchwehm ended with an experience he'll never forget. After spending several days in intensive care earlier this year battling a serious case of pneumonia, Brayden was named an honorary bat boy for the Chicago Cubs yesterday. Not only did the Wauconda boy and his family get to attend the game against the Atlanta Braves, but he and his two siblings also met some players, sat in the dugout and collected autographs beforehand. Cold, rain no match for Special Olympians' spirit

Inclement weather forced the cancellation of field events at this year's Special Olympics Illinois Northeastern/Area 13 Spring Games, but despite the unrelenting drizzle, cold and wind, the cauldron still burned during opening ceremonies in Lake Zurich, and track events proceeded as if it were 70 degrees and sunny. Huge kites soar above Glen Ellyn's Maryknoll Park

The crowd was thinner than the wet, cold air at Maryknoll Park in Glen Ellyn during yesterday's kite event sponsored by the Glen Ellyn Park District, but it didn't stop some real kite lovers from launching one of the largest kites to fly over the suburbs. Full story.

Batavia celebrates tradition, community with Loyalty Day Parade

For Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1197 Cmdr. Andy Franke, the annual Loyalty Day Parade in Batavia is all about tradition. The theme for the 42nd annual parade, which took place yesterday, honored the 100th anniversary of Flag Day - yet another tradition with close ties to the community. Flag Day founder Bernard Cigrand was a Batavia resident. "I didn't grow up here," Franke said, "but I know how special all this is to the town." Full story.

Sale goes to 6-0 in win over Orioles

Chris Sale took a shutout into the sixth inning, Brett Lawrie homered for the third straight day and the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-1 Sunday for a split of the four-game series. Off to the best start of his career, Sale (6-0) allowed one run, five hits and four walks over 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander is the first White Sox pitcher to win his first six starts in a season since Jon Garland went 8-0 in 2005. Full story.

Cubs lose to lowly Braves with bigger challenges ahead
