Softball: Bailitz, Hersey top Glenbrook North

Hersey's softball team beat the rain and host Glenbrook North on Saturday morning in Northbrook .

The Huskies earned a 13-1 five-inning nonconference triumph over the Spartans as Sarah Bailitz threw a 2-hitter for the win.

The freshman (4-5) struck out three and walked two in what was supposed to be Game 1 of a doubleheader. The second game was canceled due to rain.

Katie Wingerter (3-for-4) belted 2 doubles for the Huskies (8-9) while Mikayla Tsagalis (2-for-3) and Maddie Flynn each had 1 double. Teammate Kaitlyn Denten also went 2-for-3.

Palatine 4, Grant 2: Grace Huff (2-for-3, double, RBI), Megan Breytenbach (2-for-3, double, 2 RBI), Jade DeMars (2-for-4, double, RBI), Kenzie Craver (2-for-4, double) and Emily Griffin (2-for-4, double) led the offense for visiting Palatine (7-9).

Sophomore Maddie Craver (5-1) earned the win with 11 strikeouts.

"Maddie was pitching phenomenally," said Pirates assistant coach Kristen Proffitt. "I think it was probably her best pitched game in a Pirates uniform. She had the Bulldogs' batters off balance the whole game. She really took control of the game."

Evanston 13, Wheeling 3 (5 inn): Wheeling scored all its runs in the top of fourth inning of the nonconference game in Evanston.

Offensive leaders for the Wildcats (0-11) were Christie Ambrose (1-for-3, RBI), Nikki Ferraro (1-for-2, walk), Olivia Walker (1-for-3), Kirstin Wilhelm (RBI), Hannah Bradford (1-for-2) and Abby Greenspan (1-for-3, double, RBI, 1 run), who also struck out three as the Wildcats' pitcher.

Nazareth 13, St. Viator 0 (5 inn): Meg Naughton had the extra base hit (double) for the visiting Lions (8-8, 0-2) in the East Suburban Catholic game.
