Catholic order sells site of nunnery for 125-plus years

TIPTON, Ind. (AP) - A Roman Catholic order has sold a central Indiana property that housed its nunnery for more than 125 years.

The Sisters of St. Joseph recently finalized the sale of the 38-acre Tipton property to the Diocese of Lafayette. Sister Jeannie Masterson says the order moved from the grounds in 2012, when only 14 nuns remained there.

Masterson tells the Kokomo Tribune (http://bit.ly/1O40g87 ) the order's members decided to move and sell the site about 40 miles north of Indianapolis due to the dwindling number of sisters and their advancing age.

The property contains a conference center with about 80 rooms, a chapel, two houses, a prayer grotto, a cabin retreat and farmland.

Diocese of Lafayette Bishop Tim Doherty says the diocese will use the property as a conference and retreat center.
