Illinois man charged with threatening prosecutor

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) - A southwestern Illinois man has been charged with threatening the life of St. Clair County State's Attorney Brendan Kelly.

Twenty-seven-year-old Travis Withers of Brooklyn, Illinois, was also charged with aggravated battery. Authorities say he threw a length of plastic hose at a Brooklyn police officer Friday and then made the threat against Kelly.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports (http://bit.ly/1QHTO6s ) that a criminal complaint gives no details on the threat or how it was made. But it says the threat was "because of the hostility of the defendant toward the position of Brendan Kelly as St. Clair County state's attorney."

Withers remained in St. Clair County Jail Saturday on $75,000 bail. It was unclear if he had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The News-Democrat reports that Kelly said he could not comment.
