Naperville's Last Fling to include Summerland Tour bands

Summer will be wrapping up when the fifth annual Summerland Tour swings into Naperville on Sunday, Sept. 4, during the Last Fling festival.

The tour will bring bands Sugar Ray, Everclear, Lit and Sponge to the stage for a day full of nostalgia via alternative rock.

"This lineup is stacked and this summer is going to be an adventure," Art Alexakis, Summerland Tour founder and lead guitarist and vocalist for Everclear, said in a news release.

Sugar Ray will claim the headliner's spot at 8:30 p.m. at Rotary Hill, 443 Aurora Ave., preceded by Everclear at 6:30 p.m., Lit at 5 p.m. and Sponge at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets start at $25 for general admission, $35 for pit passes and $125 for carillon experience tickets that include a catered multicourse meal, beverages, snacks, access to the front of the stage during the shows and a potential meet and greet with the bands.

Prices for general admission and pit passes rise by $10 starting July 5 to $35 and $45, respectively.

During the Summerland show, alternative rock fans can flash back with Sugar Ray to 1995, when the band that included a live DJ released the album "Lemonade and Brownies," or to 1997, when the "Floored" album came out with the breakthrough hit "Fly."

Everclear fans can hear hits from more than two decades of albums including "Sparkle and Fade," "So Much for the Afterglow," "Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile," and the band's ninth album released last year, "Black is the New Black."

Lit promises to bring post-grunge '90s tunes from "Five Smokin' Tracks from Lit" and "Tripping the Light Fantastic."

Sponge, which has performed with bands such as Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, will start the show with songs such as "Plowed" and "Molly (16 Candles)."

The Summerland Tour joins Toad the Wet Sprocket, Rusted Root and tribute bands One of These Nights and Foreigners Journey in performing during the 51st annual Last Fling, sponsored by the Naperville Jaycees over Labor Day weekend. Toad and Rusted Root will take the stage Saturday, Sept. 3, while the '70s and '80s tribute groups will open the four-day festival with free performances on Friday, Sept. 2.
