Baseball: Rosley, Montini shut out Bishop McNamara

In the midst of a strong season, Montini doesn't need a lot of help on the baseball diamond this spring.

But the Broncos certainly received some Thursday.

The recipient of seven walks, two hit by pitches and three errors, Montini cruised to a 9-0 win over Bishop McNamara (8-12) in Chicago Catholic League play in Lombard.

The Broncos (13-6-1, 4-5) scored three runs in the first without the benefit of a hit, walking four times in the inning, and never looked back.

"We've demonstrated good plate discipline all season," Montini coach Rich Janor said. "We don't swing at a lot of bad pitches."

The Broncos added four more in the second, with Jack Gerberich and Ben Steiner contributing RBI singles.

That run support was more than enough for left-handed Jake Rosley, who improved to 5-0 on the year.

Rosley fanned seven in a complete-game performance, yielding 4 hits.

"My fastball felt really alive," said Rosley, who also has victories over St. Rita and St. Francis. "I was mainly throwing that, I didn't throw a breaking ball until the third inning.

"With a 7-0 lead, it was nice to just pound the fastball and let them hit it. And the defense played great behind me."

Indeed, the defense was flawless and the home team even turned an around-the-horn double play in the sixth to get out of a mini jam.

In five of the seven innings, Rosley retired the side in order.

"He's been very solid for us all year long," Janor said. "It's nice to see him develop consistency and continue to have good outings."

Montini scored its final two runs on a bases loaded single by Alex Luka in the third.
