Baseball: Division leaders Barrington, Elk Grove score MSL wins
Tyler Trojan scored the decisive run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the seventh inning as Barrington maintained its lead in the Mid-Suburban West baseball race by topping visiting Palatine 3-2 on Thursday.
The game featured plenty of fine pitching, as Jake Zyzda earned the victory with a complete-game effort featuring 9 strikeout and 4 hits while Palatine's Charlie Van Dyke struck out three and allowed 7 hits.
Zach Oles doubled and drove in one of Palatine's runs, and Jeff Korus (2-for-2) and Blake Swanson drove in runs for the Broncos (15-6, 7-1).
Palatine (10-10, 5-3) scored both its runs in the fourth inning.
Elk Grove 7, Hersey 0: The visiting Grens completed what they started Monday as four pitchers combined to limit the Huskies to 3 hits.
Jonathan Maday pitched 4 innings and earned the decision for the Grens, who lead the Mid-Suburban East race with a 6-1 record. Elk Grove is 12-6 overall.
Joe Lopez, A.J. Lorenz and Luke Radtke doubled for Elk Grove, and Chuck Fleming had a triple. Christian Camacho had 2 hits, and Lorenz and Radtke both finished with 2 RBI.
Hersey, which got a double from Matt Abfall, slipped to 5-11 and 2-5.
Schaumburg 5, Hoffman Estates 4: Vinnie Kandefer was the hero for Schaumburg, as his 2-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning plated the tying and go-ahead runs in an MSL West win for the Saxons (10-8, 4-4).
Parker Nolan pitched most of the way and earned a victory; Kolby Miller got the final out to earn a save.
Jack Bellinger finished 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI for Schaumburg.
The Hawk dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the MSL West.
Wheeling 10, Prospect 5: D.J. Godlewski had 3 of his team's 11 hits, including a double, as visiting Wheeling picked up an MSL East victory.
Kyle Bullock finished with 2 hits for the Wildcats (9-11, 2-5) in the completion of Monday's suspended game, and Brian Maloney went 3-for-4 and drove in 2 runs.
Trevor Engquist homered and drove in 3 runs for Prospect (11-5, 3-4), and Grant Whitebloom had 2 hits.
Maloney earned the pitching decision with a complete-game effort.
Maine West 10, Highland Park 1: Warriors starter Sam Kindle tossed a beauty, limited the Giants to 3 hits in Central Suburban North play.
Maine West (8-10) was busy with the bats. Jake Riportella finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI, Eric Outlaw had 2 hits and 2 RBI and Joe Swanson went 3-for-4.
Neuqua Valley 5, Conant 1: Wildcats Ricky Castro limited Conant to 3 hits in earning a complete-game victory in a nonconference matchup as the host Cougars slipped to 9-11.
