Diego Castro wins top individual award in Australian soccer

SYDNEY (AP) - Perth Glory winger Diego Castro has won the top individual honor in Australia's A-League.

The Spaniard earned 34 votes, one clear of Aaron Mooy and seven ahead of Bruno Fornaroli, both of Melbourne City.

Castro scored 13 goals in his first A-League season after moving from Spanish club Getafe last August.

Perth manager Kenny Lowe described Castro as "humble and inclusive," adding "he's a free spirit and he's a joy, so we'll just let him be free."

Fornaroli, who is from Uruguay, won the Golden Boot with 23 goals in the regular season.

Guillermo Amor was voted coach of the year after guiding Adelaide from last place last season to the top spot at the end of the 2015-16 regular season and into Sunday's grand final against Western Sydney Wanderers.
