Bobby Knight's support of Trump no surprise

Bobby Knight reportedly is supporting Donald Trump's pursuit of the GOP's presidential nomination.

In one way, this is about as surprising as Refrigerator Perry endorsing ice cream.

In another way, it's shocking.

Seriously, aren't The Bobby and The Donald the same person?

Every time a Republican debate was conducted, I was on the edge my seat waiting for Trump to throw his across the room.

Yes, I know, the candidates weren't in chairs, but it still seemed like Trump would improvise.

This isn't meant to commend or condemn either Knight or Trump. It's just meant to make fun of their similarities.

Neither of these guys is Iike us. each is wealthier, more successful and more famous than all of us put together.

Knight collected more college basketball victories than anyone in history until his pupil, Mike Krzyzewski, topped his record.

Trump collected more money than most of us will in our combined lifetimes.

They did it their way, too, which raises the question of whether Frank Sinatra would have endorsed Trump, too.

The comparisons really are stunning, right up to Trump and Knight sounding so angry so much of the time.

Trump is an international incident waiting to happen; Knight attacked a San Juan cop in Puerto Rico during a U.S. practice for the Pan American Games.

Trump wants to build a wall between the United States and Mexico; Knight built one between himself and anyone who dared criticize him.

Trump slams elements of the media; Knight routinely bashed reporters in news conferences.

"A lot of us learn to write in second grade," Knight famously said. "Most of us go on to greater things."

Hard to argue with that, though Knight might have just been joking. His standup-comedy routine isn't exactly as precise as, say, Jerry Seinfeld's.

"And I would be the first to admit," Knight has been quoted as saying, "that I probably … over the time that I have been in coaching, indulging my own sense of humor at press conferences has not been greatly to my benefit."

Who knows, maybe Trump was indulging his own sense of humor recently when he referred to 9/11 as 7-Eleven.

Misspeaking can happen when a person rants publicly as often as Trump does and Knight did.

But, seriously, Bobby Knight and Donald Trump aren't the same person?

Take his, uh, I mean their remarks pertaining to women.

Knight once said to Connie Chung on national TV, "I think that if rape is inevitable …," wait, let's not repeat his words but merely acknowledge that it wasn't pretty.

Trump also has angered some women's groups with comments about women.

The Trump campaign reportedly is supported by several other sports figures, all of whom fit the macho image The Donald is trying to project on the way to purportedly making "America great again."

How about putting these Trumpsters - Mike Ditka, Mike Tyson, Hulk Hogan and Bobby Knight - in a steel cage to discuss presidential politics?

it's Knight and Trump who seem to go together better than any of them would.

The Donald and The Bobby would be some kind of running mates in November if Trump wins the nomination.

Some kind of running mates if, that is, the two of them aren't one person.
