Volunteer firefighter accused of arson in northern Illinois

FREEPORT, Ill. (AP) - A 20-year-old volunteer firefighter is accused of setting several fires in northern Illinois.

Kenneth Grabow of Orangeville is charged with six counts of criminal damage to property and four counts of arson in connection with five fires in the Orangeville area. He's accused of setting fires at three barns, a shed and an abandoned home between April 14 and 19.

Stephenson County Sheriff's Lt. Richard Roodhouse says Grabow was identified as a suspect early on in the investigation after witnesses reported seeing his vehicle near the scene of some of the fires.

Stephenson County Sheriff David Snyders says Grabow had been a member of the Orangeville department for about eight months.

Grabow remained in the Stephenson County Jail on $250,000 bond Tuesday morning.

It wasn't immediately known if he has an attorney.
