Lightning strikes Vernon Hills townhouse building

A lightning strike Monday night displaced four families in a Vernon Hills townhouse building.

According to a news release from the Countryside Fire Protection District, lightning struck about 7 p.m. on the 300 block of West Alpine Springs Drive. Multiple 911 calls reported smoke in the building.

Firefighters arrived to found two holes in the roof of the townhouse building - one at each end. Crews found miscellaneous electrical issues but no smoke or fire, according to the news release.

Countryside was assisted by the Mundelein, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, and Knollwood fire departments. Vernon Hills police assisted with evacuating residents.
