Softball: Petrus powers an impressive Carmel victory

Claire Petrus homered twice and drove in 6 runs, and Carmel Catholic's softball team beat Antioch 11-3 in a nonconference showdown on Wednesday.

Petrus finished 3-for-5 with a double, as well, and earned the complete-game win. She allowed 5 hits and 3 walks, struck out seven and yielded only 1 earned run. Emma Bartz was 3-for-4 with 3 doubles and 2 RBI for Carmel, and Amanda Elert went 2-for-3 with a walk and 3 runs scored.

Ashley Stephens (RBI) and Avery Malicki doubled for Antioch, which fell to 14-5 with its fourth loss in five games.

Grayslake North 13, Hampshire 12: In a back-and-forth affair, the Knights survived a three-run bottom of the seventh by the Whip-Purs in the Fox Valley Conference game.

Jess Vaughn went 2-for-3 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and 2 walks for Grayslake North. Katie Moats finished 3-for-5 with 3 RBI and a double, and Grace Brown was 2-for-4. Dani Runyon, Kylie Conrad and Carissa Popp all contributed RBI as well for the Knights.

Prairie Ridge 2, Grayslake Central 1: The Rams lost the Fox Valley Conference game, despite outhitting the Wolves 8-2.

Reagen Radke struck out seven and walked three in suffering the tough-luck loss. Grayslake Central (10-5) received 2-for-3 efforts at the plate from Brooke Heraty (double) and Radke. Teagan Truskowski was 2-for-4, and Trinity Buck also had a double for Grayslake Central.

Vernon Hills 18, Glenbrook North 1: Sami Saliba went 3-for-5 with a two-run homer, double and 7 RBI for the Cougars in their nonconference win.

Dana Meline was 4-for-4, while Delaney Bowen finished 4-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBI. Nicole Pieper also went 3-for-5, Sara Lenzi singled and knocked in a pair of runs, Danielle Comitor was 2-for-4 with a double, and Rose Ferolo contributed a double.

Comitor pitched a five-inning complete game. allowing 2 hits and striking out three.
