Boys volleyball: Vernon Hills prevails in three against Lakes

Johnny McDonald and Jared Bennett each had 9 kills and 6 digs, as Vernon Hills' boys volleyball team outlasted Lakes 25-12, 17-25, 25-19 in North Suburban Conference action on Wednesday night.

Bennett also served 2 aces, while McDonald added a pair of block kills. Vernon Hills (8-6, 3-0) also got 4 aces and 3 kills from Matt Kushnir. Jake Fiarito was 63-of-63 setting with 22 assists. Chris Winter contributed 4 kills and 3 blocks, and Matt Jung had aces.

Lake Zurich d. Zion-Benton: Nate Amos slammed 7 kills for the Bears, who won the North Suburban match 25-19, 25-18.

Lake Zurich (7-2, 2-0) also received 4 kills apiece from Andrew Gilbertson, Nick Meyer, Jake Gorey and Alex Krasowski. Jeff Carmody dished out 23 assists and served 2 aces.

Warren d. Antioch: Zach Schultz rang up 5 kills, 3 aces, 5 digs and 2 blocks, as the Blue Devils won 25-10, 25-13 in North Suburban action.

Warren (6-8, 2-0) also got 3 kills apiece from Parker Main and Jake White. Aaron Wagan and Kyle Wells distributed 11 and 6 assists, respectively. Matt Daniel led the Blue Devils with 9 digs, and Maui Viola had five.

Lake Forest d. Stevenson: Justin Leonard had 10 kills for the Patriots, who lost the North Suburban math 32-30, 25-18.

Alex Pieprzycki had 3 kills for Stevenson, and Jeffrey Wang lofted 15 assists.

Grayslake Central d. Larkin: Keegan Zack pounded 15 kills, as the Rams won 25-16, 20-25, 25-17 in a nonconference match.

Bobby Fortmann added 8 kills and 3 blocks for the Rams, while Ethan Rockel had 7 kills. Matt Kozak and John Wang dished out 20 and 10 assists, respectively, and each served 2 aces. Grayslake Central also got 10 digs from Josh Garcia and 2 blocks from Danny Lantz.

"The Rams had a great game," Grayslake Central coach Dan Erlenbaugh said. "It was a solid win. Larkin played well, but we kept pushing in Game 3. I am very proud of the way we played."
