N. Illinois man pleads guilty in girlfriend's 2012 death

ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - A Northern Illinois man has pleaded guilty to beating his girlfriend to death in Rockford in 2012.

The Rockford Register Star reports (http://bit.ly/1WsvU6c ) 40-year-old Kurt Knutson of Loves Park pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder on Tuesday.

Knutson had been scheduled to go on trial Tuesday in Winnebago County on charges that he killed 27-year-old Samantha Ann Therriault. Instead, Knutson changed his plea.

The Winnebago County Coroner's Office says Terriault died after suffering blunt force trauma. Rockford police and prosecutors said in court documents that she had been beaten and strangled.

Judge John Lowry scheduled a sentencing hearing for May 31.
