Demolition waste to be recycled, push McLean County to goal

NORMAL, Ill. (AP) - Officials in Normal officials believe agreements to recycle demolition and construction waste could help McLean County in central Illinois reach a long-held goal of recycling 40 percent of its waste.

The (Bloomington) Pantagraph (http://bit.ly/1WamY57 ) reports that Normal approved a deal with Henson Disposal and Recycling last month. Bloomington officials are poised to do the same.

The deal calls for Normal to pay $627,000 for Henson to recycle the demolition material. That's $3,000 less than the town would have paid to bury it in a landfill.

Henson co-owner Tom Kirk says the company was able to start accepting the waste on Jan. 1, because of changes in state regulations.

The current landfill will be full by 2017 and building a new one nearby seems unlikely.
