Entertainment kicks off celebration at Schaumburg library

Free fun, who can resist it? Come to "More than Meets the Eye," the National Library Week celebration at the Schaumburg Township District Library, and you'll find free fun by the truckload. A magic show, movie, whimsical mural project and a chance to make memories in a family-friendly environment will all be included in this event from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, April 10, at the library's central location, 130 S. Roselle Road, Schaumburg. It won't take long for you to see that your library is so much more than books.

Begin by watching performances in the lobby. From noon to 1 p.m., the sounds of Acoustic Guitarist Jacob Sweet will fill the air. From 1-2 p.m., Artist Dan Laib will use his imagination and remarkable artistic skills to change a blank canvass into an illustration. Our final lobby performance, from 2-3 p.m., will be Classical Guitarist Brad Conroy performing selections from the Renaissance through the 21st Century, with some of his own compositions.

All ages are invited to see "Quicker Than the Eye" from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in the Rasmussen Room. Magician Sean Masterson will entertain with amazing sleight of hand and mind-blowing illusions, embellished with stories, masks and puppets. A limited number of free tickets will be available in kidsZone 20 minutes before the show, so it would be best to get there by 1:10 p.m. if you want a spot.

The death-defying, mystical acrobatics and virtuosities of Cirque du Soleil will be yours to experience if you come to the movie in the Audiovisual Theatre. "Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away" will be shown from 1-2:30 p.m. In this PG-rated movie, a young woman is entranced by an aerialist. When they fall into the dreamlike world of Cirque du Soleil and are separated, they travel through the different tent worlds trying to find each other. No tickets or registration are required for attending the movie.

Have you ever wanted to paint a mural? Wait no more! All ages are invited to the kidsZone Program Room throughout the National Library Week begin Celebration to create a mural. Set free your inner artist, as you paint your heart away. Like the movie, this event requires no tickets or registration.

As you wander through the lobby, see if you can find the images hidden within the four Magic Eye pictures. If you need a little help, an answer key will be available at the Reception Desk.

While your having fun with music, magic, movies and Magic Eye pictures, be sure to stop by the library's information table, where you can find out about resources, services and upcoming programs. Staff will be available to answer any of your library-related questions. There will also be tables in the lobby at which staff will demonstrate how to download e-books and music to tablets or smartphones. Drop by any time from noon to 3 p.m., and bring your device so you can try downloading with experts on hand to provide assistance.

Is this enough to entice you to come to the Schaumburg Township District Library on Sunday, April 10? If not, there's always the books, DVDs, computers, and of course, the Digital Production Studio with its professional quality cameras and green screen. Stop by and join us as we begin National Library Week with "More Than Meets the Eye." You'll be amazed by all that awaits you beyond the library's doors.
