Woman with Lake County ties severely injured at equestrian event

A woman with Lake County ties was badly injured Saturday at an equestrian competition in northern Florida.

Laura Linback, 48, part of the family that operates the Woodrun Farm equine facility near Mundelein, was riding a horse at the HITS Ocala Winter Championship in Marion County, Florida, when the animal collapsed and died, according to event organizers.

Linback and the horse had just competed in a jumping competition, HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri said in a statement. Linback suffered a "severe" head injury and was flown by helicopter to an unspecified hospital, according to the statement.

"Surgery was performed on Laura and all of us are awaiting word on her progress," Struzzieri said in the statement. "All of our thoughts are with Laura and her family at this time."

No other details about the accident or Linback's condition were immediately available. Linback and her family also operate a Woodrun facility in Morriston, Florida, during the winter.

A Woodrun representative couldn't be reached for comment.
