Softball: Dundee-Crown sweeps Streamwood

Being shut out by Belvidere earlier in the week, Dundee-Crown softball coach Tracy Beatty certainly had to have her doubts about the offensive attack her Chargers would possess in 2016.

She didn't need to worry.

Racking up 21 runs on 21 hits, the Chargers powered their way to a doubleheader sweep of Streamwood 10-0 in 5 innings and 11-4 Saturday in Carpentersville.

"We forgot to take our bats to Belvidere," said Beatty. "We were batters not hitters. I want our team to go to the plate aggressive. We had a good two-hour hitting practice after the Belvidere game and we came out today very aggressive and focused at the plate. We saw the ball and we were comfortable at the plate. It was a good day for our hitters ."

The best offensive effort of the day for D-C came from Kayla Sjodin in the second game. Sjodin crushed a grand slam home runs and added a 3-run homer in driving in 7 runs. Sjodin collected 2 hits with 2 RBI in Game 1.

"I was seeing the ball good all day and had good swings," said Sjodin. "I didn't think either ball was going out. It was nice to help the team win."

Beatty realizes Sjodin has home run power.

"Kayla had good cuts at the plate today," said Beatty. "If she gets the ball up in the air it has a chance to go out."

Deanna Origer (2 RBI) and winning pitcher Madie Pautz collected 2 hits each for the winners.

Streamwood (2-2), which was shut out on 2 singles in Game 1, bounced back with a 4-run, 11-hit effort in the nightcap.

Jessica Daley (solo homer, 2 doubles), Rebecca Roncone (triple, RBI double) and Ariana Wolfard had 3 hits apiece.

"We swung the bats much better in Game 2," said Streamwood coach Natalie Randazzo. "We are playing four freshmen and the early season has been a learning experience. D-C had great at-bats all day.''

In Game 1, Sydney Ruggles blanked the Sabres on 2 singles in 4 innings of work. The hard-throwing sophomore struck out 8 with 1 walk in registering the win.

"My riseball and screwball were really working," said Ruggles. "We have high expectations this season. We are ready for the pressure.'

Andrea Conway (3 runs scored, 2 RBI), Sjodin (2 RBI), Katie English (triple, double, 2 RBI) and Hannah Gestrich collected 2 hits apiece for the Chargers.
