Join a 'Restoration Power Play' April 5 at Dick Young Forest Preserve
Clear your schedule and join the Chicago Steel hockey team and Forest Preserve District of Kane County for a "Restoration Power Play."
Forest Preserve volunteers, local hockey players and their host families need an assist from you from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at Dick Young Forest Preserve, 39W115 Main St. in Batavia.
Give them the man advantage as they faceoff against nonnative buckthorn and honeysuckle. These plants crowd out native oak seedlings and wildflowers, and if unchecked, heavily diminish the quality of a woodland.
The Chicago Steel are members of the United States Hockey League, the only Tier 1 Junior League in the United States.
"As the Fox Valley's newest team, we look forward to this opportunity to serve our new community working with our partners and neighbors at the Forest Preserve District," said Dan Lehv, president of Chicago Steel Hockey.
"We think this is a great opportunity to partner with the Chicago Steel, help introduce them to the community, as well as improve Burton Woods, within Dick Young Forest Preserve, said Monica Meyers, executive director of the Forest Preserve District.
"Volunteers truly allow us to expand our restoration efforts, and we're looking forward to a great event," she said.
All ages are welcome to participate in this fun, restoration workday. After clearing nonnative brush, the Steel players will stick around to meet fans and sign autographs.
