Baseball: Gosswein, Kmet both fan 12 in victories for Barrington, St. Viator

Lefty Brooks Gosswein struck out 12 in 6 innings, allowing just 1 hit as Barrington's baseball team rolled to a 7-0 victory over St. Ignatius (Ohio) at Cocoa Expo's main stadium in Florida on Tuesday.

Jacob Chapman had 2 hits and drove in 3 runs for Barrington (2-0). Tristan Michaels had a pair of hits and tossed a scoreless relief inning, while Patrick Dehnert doubled and Jake Zyzda tripled.

St. Viator 7, Castle View (Colo.) 4: Cole Kmet fanned 12 in just 4⅓ innings to lift the Lions past their opponent from Castle Rock, Colo. in Greenway, Ariz.

Mike Ragauskis doubled and drove in 2 runs for the Lions (3-0), and Kmet and Dan Sullivan both had a pair of hits.

Prospect 6, Cary-Grove 3: Prospect's baseball team got a 2-run single from Grant Zellmer in the fifth inning and went on to claim a 6-3 victory over host Cary-Grove in a nonconference matchup.

Grant Whitebloom went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI, and Ryan Molini was 2-for-4 with a double, 1 RBI and a stolen base for the Knights (1-0).

Trevor Engquist finished 3-for-4 as Prospect out-hit Cary-Grove 12-2.

Starter Pasquale Atteo earned the win after allowing 1 hit and 2 unearned runs over 3⅓ innings. Reliever Ben Courtney allowed 1 hit without a run in 3⅔ innings.

Hoffman Estates 1, Lake Zurich 0: An unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning made a winner of Ryan Ward and Hoffman Estates.

Ward and Lake Zurich starter Nick Sanders both pitched well before the Hawks took advantage late. Luke Barnes scored the decisive run after singling, taking second base on a pickoff attempt and scoring on a throwing error on a ball hit by Ward.

Tyler Snep had 3 hits for Lake Zurich, and Sanders had 2.

Ward allowed 6 hits while striking out six and walking none.

Sanders struck out five and walked none.

Christian Liberty 6, Marian Central 4: The visiting Chargers scored twice in the top of the seventh as Aiden Miller singled in a pair of runs.

Reliever Chris Hoffmann got the victory by striking out the side in the bottom half of the inning.

Palatine 4, Prairie Ridge 3: Palatine made the most of 7 singles, improving to 3-3 with a nonconference victory.

The Pirates scored twice in the second inning on an error, then added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Wolves scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to draw within a run, but Charlie Van Dyke got the final out to earn a save in support of winner Chris Refka (6⅔ IP, 6 hits, 3 strikeouts).

Buffalo Grove 9, Sidwell Friends 3: The Bison improved to 2-2 after producing a 6-run first inning which included RBI singles from Ben Moran, Jack Churchill and Chase Marsh.

Tyler Rundquist drove in a run in the third inning to help make a winner of starter Justin Meyer. Moran and Marsh both finished with 2 hits.

Oswego 2, Elk Grove 1 (8 inn.): The Grens got an RBI double from A.J. Navarro but couldn't get much else going in an extra-inning, nonconference road loss.

Christian Camacho doubled and pitched 3 innings, allowing only an unearned run for Elk Grove (1-3).

A.J. Lorenz also had a double for the Grens, who produced 8 hits but also struck out eight times.

Schaumburg 4, Dundee-Crown 3: Tommy Larsen tripled and drove in 2 runs as the Saxons improved to 3-2 by making the most of 5 hits.

Winning pitcher Andrew Ralston allowed 4 hits in 5⅓ innings, and Jack Bellinger earned a save by getting the final out.

Fremd 7, South Elgin 1: The host Vikings scored 3 runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to produce a nonconference win over the Storm.
