Adi scores twice late, Timbers tie Real Salt Lake 2-2

SANDY, Utah (AP) - Fanendo Adi scored twice in a 4-minute span late in the second half to give the Portland Timbers a 2-2 tie with Real Salt Lake on Saturday night.

In the 79th minute, Dairon Asprilla chipped a shot toward goal that ricocheted off the crossbar and fell to Adi six yards from the goal. Adi volleyed it in for his second score of the season.

Four minutes later, Jamison Olave was ejected for apparently elbowing Adi in the face, and Adi scored on the ensuing penalty.

Adi has scored twice in 10 of 18 games since joining Portland in 2014.

Real Salt Lake finished with nine players.

Joao Plata got his third goal of the season for RSL (1-0-2) in the 16th minute, but then RSL captain Kyle Beckerman was issued a red card 15 minutes later after a sliding tackle on Adi, reducing the visitors to 10 men.

"When you leave your feet, and leave your cleats exposed, you leave it up to the referee to make a tough decision," said RSL coach Jeff Cassar.

Despite the disadvantage, RSL double its lead in the 58th minute on a goal by Yura Movsisyan.

Portland took advantage of the two-player advantage, attacking RSL's goal and nearly earning a winner later, but substitute Jack McInerney's blistering shot was saved by RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando to preserve the tie.

"It seems like consolation to get the draw. We're never satisfied with that," said Portland coach Caleb Porter. "We do stop a conference opponent from getting three points on us. And the last two years, the playoffs have come down to a point on the last day for most teams, and to claw out a point isn't what we wanted. But, under the circumstances, we'll take it."
