St. Charles Kohl's to close in June

The Kohl's store in St. Charles will close in a few months as part of the company's plan to close underperforming stores.

Kohl's CEO Kevin Mansell announced the decision to close 18 stores in February and said the change was expected to generate annual savings of approximately $45 million and annual depreciation savings of approximately $10 million. At the time the stores expected to close were not announced, but a news release on Wednesday, included the store at 3840 E. Main Street, St. Charles among those that will close as of June 19.

"To reach this decision, Kohl's conducted a comprehensive review of all of the markets across the country to understand every element that contributes to making a store successful - from review of the other stores in each trade area, to the rent and expenses involved in operating any location, to how each customer base is evolving and adapting to the company's integrated omnichannel effort," the release said.

The release also said that every eligible store associate will be offered the chance to work at a nearby Kohl's or can accept a severance package. Officials said each store employs between 80 and 100 people.

The St. Charles store is the only Illinois location on the list of closings, which includes nine stores in California and others in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, New Jersey and Wisconsin.

Kohl's also has locations in nearby Batavia, Wheaton, Bloomingdale and South Elgin.
