Tirio has early lead in McHenry County recorder race
Joe Tirio, who's vowed to eliminate the McHenry County recorder of deeds position if elected to it, held a solid lead over two fellow Republicans seeking the office, according to unofficial results early Wednesday morning.
Unofficial tallies with 123 of 212 precincts reporting show Woodstock resident Tirio, 50, with 13,188 votes, Crystal Lake resident Joni Smith, 48, with 11,597, and Woodstock resident Tina Hill, 55, with 9,679.
Incumbent Phyllis Walters, who has served the position since 1984, is not seeking re-election.
The recorder's office is responsible for maintaining and retrieving real estate records, documents and plats of subdivision in McHenry County.
Tirio said he wants to spend his four-year term working to abolish the recorder's position to save money. The functions of the office would merge with the county clerk's office under his plan, he said.
Hill, a McHenry County Board member for 13 years, said she would "trim and streamline" the office by increasing technology and reorganizing its structure. She said she is skeptical of Tirio's idea to run for the position with the intention of eliminating it.
Smith, a supervisor in the recorder's office and former Nunda Township trustee, said the recorder needs to remain an elected position in order to serve as an advocate for residents. She was endorsed by Walters.
