Speedway wants to expand in Mundelein

Plans to expand a gas station at one of Mundelein's busiest intersections are moving forward.

Speedway wants to expand the company's footprint on the 500 block of Townline Road, which is at the southeast corner of routes 45 and 60 on the village's south side.

Gas pumps and a convenience store now operate on about an acre at the corner. The company is set to purchase an additional 1.3 acres of vacant land that adjoins the site to the east, according to village documents. That land is now part of the Oak Creek Plaza shopping center.

The company wants to raze the existing Speedway structures and build new ones.

Instead of the current selection of six, two-sided pumps, the company wants to install 11, two-sided pumps. A 4,600-square-foot convenience store would replace the current 3,900-square-foot store.

Trees and shrubs will be added to the site, too.

"I think that's going to be such a nice addition," Trustee Dawn Abernathy said.

Trustees on Monday agreed to authorize the creation of several ordinances that would be needed for the proposal to become a reality. For example, the land Speedway plans to purchase needs to be rezoned to allow a gas station.

Rob Sweet, a consultant for Speedway, attended the meeting and said the company hopes to have the new station completed by April 2017.

The project will cost the company about $4.3 million, Village Administrator John Lobaito said during Monday's village board meeting.

Lobaito said Speedway will seek a sales tax-sharing agreement to help cover the cost of the project. Officials discussed that part of the plan Monday, too.

Trustees were divided on whether the village should rebate to the company a portion of sales tax generated at the Speedway. No vote was taken on that element of the plan.

A Speedway station opened on the site in 1975. It last was renovated in 1993, village documents indicate.
