Chicago event to mark anniversary of tsunami in Japan

CHICAGO (AP) - An event to commemorate the tsunami that hit in Japan in 2011 has been planned for Chicago.

Sunday afternoon's event at the Chicago Cultural Center will include music, a photo exhibit and speakers.

Five years ago on March 11, a powerful earthquake off the coast of Japan unleashed a massive tsunami. More than 19,000 people were killed and entire villages were laid to waste. Power to a nuclear plant was cut off, triggering multiple meltdowns in the world's second-worst nuclear disaster.

The Chicago ceremony has been organized by groups led by the Osaka Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International.

Also participating will be the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago, the Japan America Society of Chicago, Japanese Chamber of Commerce & Industry of Chicago, and the Japan External Trade Organization Chicago Office.
