DuPage County jury declares man 'sexually dangerous'

A DuPage County jury deliberated for 23 minutes Friday evening before finding a 52-year-old Rockford man with HIV and a history of convictions and mental health issues to be "sexually dangerous."

Lawrence Adamczyk was immediately committed to the Illinois Department of Corrections for an indefinite period after jurors decided he suffered from mental illness and was likely to commit more sex-related crimes if he were to be released.

Adamczyk testified for nearly 2½ painstaking hours, rambling about growing up in Chicago, moving to the suburbs and rarely addressing his case.

First Assistant State's Attorney Joe Ruggiero objected several dozen times during Adamczyk's testimony, and Judge Brian Telander had to redirect Adamczyk and remind him to stay on course just as many times.

Adamczyk told jurors that aliens frequently talk to him and that he believed he could make the world a better place by collecting and sharing the semen of adolescent boys.

Adamczyk has been held in DuPage County jail since he was arrested on a burglary count in 2014 at a Lake Park High School campus, where prosecutors said he broke in through a locked door and attempted to lure a 17-year-old student with promises of alcohol and Viagra, which were in his car.

According to court records and his own testimony, Adamczyk was previously arrested at a boys high school swim meet in Brookfield. He was also convicted of battery for inappopriately touching minors at a St. Charles health club and at a Rockford mall.

"We have a fire burning out of control," Assistant State's Attorney Mary Fleming said during closing arguments. "(Adamczyk) is an HIV positive man who wants to have raw sex with teenage boys."

Adamczyk, who represented himself during the three-day trial, gave a 30-minute closing argument in which he railed on the criminal justice system, criticized DuPage deputies in the jail for spending too much time on their smartphones and not enough time interacting with inmates, promised to wow the world with his plan for a green fuel to replace coal and oil and saying, if he were released, he would be traveling to Mars within 15 to 20 years.

He also explained his personal theory on why "so many people have foot fetishes" and why amputees often suffer from "phantom limbs."

Adamczyk also admitted to suffering from bipolar disorder and said he had started hearing voices around 2000. He said he crashed his motorcycle into a guardrail around that time at the behest of aliens.

"The aliens told me, 'It's decision time. We will make sure you don't die,'" Adamczyk told jurors. "They told me, 'It's all necessary.'"
