'Bad Feminist' author Roxane Gay to speak at Oakton
Roxane Gay, author of "Bad Feminist," will speak at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in the Footlik Theater at the Des Plaines campus of Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Road. Admission is free.
"Roxane Gay has emerged as one of the most significant cultural critics of her time. Her important work on race and gender has proved invaluable both in the classroom and beyond, and she has helped make feminism accessible for a whole new generation of readers," said Kathleen Carot, Oakton Professor of Women's and Gender Studies.
Her 2014 debut novel, "An Untamed State," documents unflinchingly the trauma of a kidnapping and rape victim in Haiti while her wealthy father and white husband negotiate her release.
"Bad Feminist," her 2014 collection of essays, was on The New York Times best-seller list and continues to garner international acclaim for its reflective, no-holds-barred exploration of feminism. And her 2015 TED talk, "Confessions of a Bad Feminist," has been viewed more than a million times.
Gay will conduct a book signing following the program and copies of her works will be available for purchase.
