Hundreds of flights canceled during afternoon snow
The snow has largely moved out of the suburbs after a couple of inches or more fell in some areas in the afternoon.
Some 570 flights were reported canceled at O'Hare International Airport, and 70 at Midway. Plus delays were averaging up to 90 minutes at O'Hare and 30 minutes at Midway.
ABC 7 Chicago reported that two planes skidded off the runway around lunchtime. Nobody was hurt.
A small corporate jet slid off a runway around 12:30 p.m., ABC 7 said. The Embraer Phenom E55P plane operated by NetJets was attempting to land at the time.
Earlier at 12:09 p.m., an American MD83, Flight 1051, was departing O'Hare en route to Newark, New Jersey, when it requested a tow from the end of Taxiway J after sliding, ABC 7 said. The plane, with 65 passengers, was de-iced and then resumed its flight.
Temperatures will drop into the teens overnight.
ABC 7 reported snowfalls of about 5 inches in Northern suburbs especially close to Lake Michigan, and 1 to 2 inches in Northwest suburbs and western Lake County into McHenry County.
This morning's slippery conditions caused accidents in Wadsworth, Gurnee, Volo and Waukegan.
