Harper's Pych makes national semifinals

Cory Pych was the only Harper wrestler to survive the quarterfinals Friday in the NJCAA wrestling championships in Council Bluff, Iowa.

Pych advanced to the 149-pound semifnals via fall at 2:34 into his match with Nate Skonieczny of Jameston in the round of 16.

Next up for Pych is Chris Garcia of Clackamas.

Harper's Ian Miller lost to the top seed at 125 pounds, Alex Delacruz of Iowa Central, after winning a first-rounder.

The tournament's No. 3 seed at 133 pounds, Harper's Zach MacCallaugh, earned a first-round bye and advanced to the round of 16, where he was upset by 14th seed Tepra Wright of Ellsworth. Wright won by pin at 4:02.

At 141 pounds, another Hawk was upset by pin in the round of 16. This time it was 11th-seeded Jimmy Knapp, beaten by Jason Alfau of Iowa Central.

The 197-pound weight clas saw another clash between Iowa Central and Harper. ICC came away with another victory as 19th-seeded Kendrick Jones defeated third-seeded Cody Barnes.

Harper sits 15th in the team standings after the tournament's first day.
