Rock Island County approves $28M for new courthouse

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (AP) - The Rock Island County Board has approved spending $28 million to build a new courthouse.

Judges and county officials say the existing county courthouse is dilapidated and no longer fit for use. The proposal means that the county will issue bonds to cover the cost of building a 53,000-square-foot new courthouse that will be connected to the Rock Island County Justice Center.

The Tuesday night vote was 15-8 in favor of the new courthouse.

The new four-story building will have six courtrooms along with offices for the clerk, prosecutors and court administrators.

The Rock Island Argus reports (http://bit.ly/1LFXJ2t) it's still not known what will happen to the existing courthouse. It's also unclear where the county recorder's offices will be located because there is no room in the new courthouse.
