Visitation, services set for Vernon Hills police officer

Visitation for Vernon Hills police Officer Andy Rheintgen, will be 1 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, at Strang Funeral Chapel, 410 E. Belvidere Road (Route 120), Grayslake.

A funeral Mass is set for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22, at St. Mary of Vernon Parish, 236 Route 45. Burial will follow at Ascension Cemetery, 1920 Buckley Road, Libertyville.

Rheintgen, 39, a decorated police officer, died Wednesday from esophageal cancer. He had been with the department for 17 years, first as a community service officer and then as a sworn officer.

He received a department award for rescuing a resident from a burning house before firefighters arrived and was commended in 2014 for his role in the arrest of a serial arsonist.

Rheintgen grew up in Vernon Hills and died a day after being taken to a suburban hospice facility. As the ambulance transporting him passed through Vernon Hills, dozens of police officers from Vernon Hills and other agencies, as well as friends and relatives, stood along Route 60 to show their support.

He was active in various community events, including National Night Out and the Special Olympics.

Survivors include his wife, Susan, and a daughter.
