Barrington's Hasanov connects with UIC

Barrington's Abby Hasanov has made plenty of big connections during her four years as a Fillies gymnast.

On Wednesday, Hasanov made another huge one: signing a scholarship to participate in gymnastics at Illinois-Chicago.

"I just loved the coaches and the team and felt more connected," said Hasanov who was also considering Ball State. "Just felt I had a better chance of being successful at UIC."

Hasanov has definitely been a success at Barrington, having earned four state medals, including state championships on bars (2014) and floor (2015).

The Fillies senior also holds the top mark at Barrington in the all-around (39.0), floor (9.9), and vault (9.9).

"Abby will be one of the most decorated gymnasts to go through the program," said Barrington coach Jason Loeffler. "For years to come her name will still be mentioned."

Hasanov will be studying either pharmacy or math education, and has not ruled out a future in coaching in a sport that has been such a big part of her life.

Hasanov joins a Flames team that includes a few friendly faces, including Amelia Raferty (Elk Grove 2014) and Maddie Larock (Prospect 2015).

It was an emotional day for Hasanov who was joined at the signing ceremony by former and current coaches, current teammates, friends and her parents and grandparents.

The Fillies senior still has a bit of unfinished business at the Illinois girls gymnastics state meet Friday and Saturday at Palatine, but she was able to take a few moments to look back on quite a distinguished journey.

"It's happened so fast," said Hasanov who has qualified in all four events and in the all-around for the upcoming state meet. "I've been doing this my whole life and I realized how it has impacted my life and others around me. I get emotional thinking about it. I really appreciate all the people that have supported me.

"I'm starting a new part of my life and I couldn't be happier."
