St. Viator, Leyden advance

Sophomore Myia Clark (13 points), sophomore Olivia Solimene (11) and senior Maggie Leazer (8) helped St. Viator's girls basketball team get off to a winning start in the Class 3A state playoffs.

The No. 5-seeded Lions (15-12) took command 20-4 after one quarter against No. 12 Ridgewood en route to a 61-24 triumph in the Rebels' own regional.

St. Viator will face Vernon Hills for the title on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Leyden 48, Prosser 44: No. 16 Leyden defeated No. 17 Prosser in the Falcons' own Class 4A regional as Artasia Gusman (11 points), Cherish Sepulveda (8) and Gianna Grande (8) led the Eagles.

Rebecca Johnson, Gusman and Annissa Lemon each had a 3-pointer for Leyden.

The No. 16-seeded Eagles take on No. 1 New Trier in today's 7 p.m. semifinal.

Montini 55, Conant 27: Junior Jorie Wachal led No. 16 Conant (10-19) with 21 points in the seminal of the Class 4A Elk Grove regional against the top-seeded Broncos, ranked No. 4 in Class 4A. Wachal had four 3-pointers.

Maine South 48, Prospect 41: Seniors Angela Roman (14 points), Nikki Matters (9) and Brenda Kendziera (7) led No. 11 Prospect in the Class 4A Maine South semifinal against the No. 6 host Hawks.

Matters had two 3-pointers for the Knights (10-19) while Margherite Pettenuzzo had one.

"We held our own on the court," said Prospect coach Gabrielle Lovin. "We played our hearts out and as a coach that is all I can ask for."

Stevenson 51, Palatine 38: Senior Ashley Shapiro led No. 14 Palatine (11-18) with 8 points in the semifinal of the Class 4A Wheeling regional against No. 3 Stevenson.

Michala Leber, Reggie Much, Corey Rinella, Geena Eliades and Carrissa Multon each had a 3-pointer for the Pirates.

Zion-Benton 61, Wheeling 51: Junior Melissa Claver scored a game-high 22 points for No. 12 Wheeling (13-16) in the semifinal of the Wildcats' own Class 4A regional against No. 6 Zion. Coco Yoshino and Kourtney Schuetz each had 3-pointer for the Wildcats.
