Powell scores 4 goals in Phoenix's upset win over Wanderers

SYDNEY (AP) - Wellington striker Blake Powell scored four goals to lead the Phoenix to a 5-2 win over Western Sydney, preventing the Wanderers from moving into first place in the A-League.

On another weekend marred by fan disturbances, Powell scored goals in the fourth, 20th, 33rd and 71st minutes. The Wanderers missed a chance to overtake first-place Brisbane, which leads by one point.

The final match of the 19th round between last-placed Central Coast and Adelaide United was delayed by four hours Sunday due to extremely hot afternoon temperatures at Gosford, north of Sydney. The Mariners eventually edged Adelaide 3-2 when the game was played early evening.

On Saturday, fan disturbances featured in the Melbourne derby between Victory and City that ended in a 2-2 draw. Police said nine flares were lit and 20 people evicted from the match at AAMI Stadium.

Before the game, police warned they would shut down games after Western Sydney fans lit 25 flares and set off detonators inside Melbourne's Etihad Stadium during last weekend's match against the Victory.

The Wanderers were fined and given a 12-month, three-point suspended sentence over the behavior of its fans.

"It's not acceptable," Victory coach Kevin Muscast said after the derby disturbances Saturday. "In light of what we've seen in the last week, those individuals shouldn't come to our games any more. I sensed the reaction from the rest of the crowd ... they were fed up with individuals with their mindless acts."

Football Federation Australia said in a statement Sunday that Victory fans caused the unrest.

"Given the circumstances we found ourselves in after last week's incidents involving a section of Western Sydney Wanderers supporters at Etihad Stadium, it's staggering that some Victory fans chose to act in this way," FFA chief executive David Gallop said.
