Deeney double strike as Watford beats Palace

LONDON (AP) - Watford moved up to eighth place in the Premier League after beating a combative but ineffective Crystal Palace 2-1 on Saturday.

Troy Deeney converted a 16th-minute penalty after he was brought down by Mile Jedinak. Emmanuel Adebayor leveled in his first home start for Palace with a looping header just before halftime.

Deeney, who returned to the starting line-up after beginning last week's tie against Spurs on the bench, got the winner with a near-post finish in the 82nd minute at Selhurst Park.

Palace, which lost Pape Souare to a red card in second-half injury time, remains without a league win in 2016 and is eight points above the drop zone.

Watford leapfrogged Merseyside rivals Everton and Liverpool, which plays Aston Villa on Sunday.
