Record diving effort for Conant's Aykroid

In Saturday morning's session of the Mid-Suburban League swimming and diving meet at Barrington, Conant junior Cole Aykroid amassed 477.65 points to win diving.

That's a trifecta of records for Aykroid - a school record, a pool record and the MSL record.

It's been a season of consistent improvement for Aykroid, who trains under diving coach Robin Yactor.

"It felt great, because I had no clue I could achieve that score," he said. "I've had pretty good scores, but not on all those dives."

Conant head coach Brian Drenth termed the performance "incredible, but not shocking, because that's what we've come to expect from him."

Buffalo Grove's Jack Delattre placed second (436.95), followed by Prospect's Anthony Liva (426.00) and Fremd's Chase Jauch (409.90).

• Rolling Meadows coach Monika Chiappetta had plenty to be pleased about Saturday, including Josh Dellorto's runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle (1:47.11) and third place in the 100 backstroke (54.39). Dellorto also led off the 200 freestyle relay that finished third (1:31.86).

"Josh's 200, he swam very tough," Chiappetta said. "That's a hard race to wrap your mind around, especially where he wants to be. I liked how he attacked it."

Other top-six individual efforts for the Mustangs included Jake Pors in the 100 free (tied for fifth), 200 free (sixth) and Filip Pancerz in the 100 back (fourth) and 100 fly (fifth).

• It wasn't hard to pick out Wheeling seniors Jake and Kyle Noel - they were the ones pretty darn excited post-meet about their team's fourth-place team finish. Kyle took second in the 100 freestyle (49.36) and Jake did likewise in the 100 backstroke (54.19). They also teamed up to lead their team to a fourth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay. "I think it started off a little slow, and throughout the meet we started picking it up a little bit," Jake Noel said. "And then we buckled down and did what we were supposed to."

• Palatine junior Alex Bartosik finished third in the 200 IM, but wasn't exactly thrilled with his turns. "I tried a new turn on back to breast, the suicide turn, where you take a stroke on your back and you do a back flip," he said, "and I feel like my turns had a little too much gliding to the walls."

• Schaumburg finished ninth with 37.5 points and got storng finishes from senior Tyler Gustafson, whose 2015-16 season started late. He tied for eighth in the 100 freestyle with Prospect's Matt Inserra, both at 51.15 seconds, a season-best. He also anchored the Saxons' sixth-place finish in the 400 freestyle relay (3:28.81).

• Sectional meets will be hosted next Saturday, with Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Hoffman Estates, Fremd, Palatine and Schaumburg heading to Stevenson. Hersey, Elk Grove, Conant, Prospect, Rolling Meadows and Wheeling will travel to Glenbrook South.
